The reasons that Werder Bremen could not get more than a 1-1 draw in their away match at Augsburg were easy to find: poor conversion of chances on offense and mistakes on defence. "If the game goes as normal then we win 5-1," said Tim Wiese. "Looking at dedication and fight, a lot of things were okay. We were the better team, but we just weren't able to win."
The game did not turn into the second away victory of the season for Bremen because of missed chances at the end. "We had a number of good chances. Too bad that we could not get a goal," said captain Clemens Fritz.
"The opponents scored a goal after a mistake of ours but we had many good chances in both halves to win here," said Aleksandar Ignjovski, who played in defensive midfield in Augsburg. Head coach Thomas Schaaf also knew why his team could not get more than one point. "Because we did not put in our chances. We applied pressure and did not let the opponents relax," said the coach. "Last week against Dortmund we did not select the correct means with a man advantage. But today we created a lot of goal chances. The main criticism is that we did not use them."
Augsburg Jos Luhukay agreed with Schaaf. "The lead was very important for us. I thought that would have allowed us to play even more offensively. But after that, Werder took over the match and created a lot of chances. The one thing that Bremen forgot to do was score more than the equaliser," said Luhukay.
