Bravely fought, narrowly lost! SV Werder Bremen had to accept defeat in their third match of the 2013-14 season to the reigning Champions League finalists and Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund. A strong defensive performance Friday night was not enough to collect points at Signal Iduna Park in a 1-0 loss.
But the team were not hanging their heads in the mixed zone afterwards. "Dortmund may have deserved the victory but we can build on our performance," said Werder midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic after the match. But all parties involved knew that despite the good defensive work that now more and more attention must be paid to the offence. WERDER.DE collected the reaction to the match.
Robin Dutt: "Defensively we showed that we can hold our own. But you can see that we still have a lot of work ahead of us in the next few weeks. We cannot yet say where the road will lead for Werder. One thing is certain, I am very satisfied with the character of the team. Everyone worked very hard and fought through a rocky path. But I cannot say when will even out that path a bit."
Marko Arnautovic: "Unfortunately we had to accept the first defeat. But the most important thing now is to look forward and continue to work hard so that we can collect points again in the coming matches."
Assani Lukimya: "The team has continued to develop. The mentality just works well. Everyone is doing their part for the other, everyone wants to help the other. Now we just have to hope that we can have the perseverance in the attack."
Zlatko Junuzovic: "The team performance was really okay. In the future, we only have to make sure that we use the space better. But we can build on our performance."
Aaron Hunt: "Quite a bit has improved by us in the last couple months. On the one hand, nobody has a problem going all out. On the other hand, our back-line is very well set. That is making it tougher for our opponents than last season."
