The first matches of the second half of the season have not really been instant hits, but Part IV was recorded Saturday afternoon. The ingredients: A very young team, lots of passion, lack of calm with the ball, little effectiveness, individual errors on set pieces and in the end splitting the spoils. Werder played to a 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim.
But director Thomas Schaaf would have gladly looked past the previous trilogy of draws and built in a three-point happy end. But the main actors on the pitch missed their cues in the first half. Werder played a poor first 45 minutes and trailed 1-0 until the 90th minute. And only in the final seconds did Marko Arnautovic equalise.
WERDR.DE collected reaction about the game:
Klaus Allofs:
"After the early deficit we could not really take over the game. Naturally we would have rather won but we have to look at the situation realistically. In the end we played very risky. We got our chances but you cannot play 90 minutes like that."
Thomas Schaaf:
"We were very motivated but we were missing a calm, clear tempo. It was important that the team ended up picking up this point."
Marko Arnautovic:
"I didn't really expect the equaliser any more. But I always hoped for it. In the second half we were better than Hoffenheim. We did not start the match well and really were hit hard with the early goal. We totally were asleep in the first half."
Clemens Fritz:
"You could see in the final stage that we absolutely wanted to get the equaliser. Just before the final whistle I even had a chance for the winner. But the fact that we scored the equaliser speaks for the morale of this team."
