The team wanted to give the fans a victory at the end of a poor second half of the season. But in the end SV Werder were left empty-handed. "We were supposed to burn up the pitch," said manager Klaus Allofs. "The team supposedly swore that. But I didn't get a sense of any of it." But Allofs wasn't the only one aggravated about the defeat to end the season. "The game once again showed that we are not able to implement our tasks and leave the pitch as winners," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. "We are not using the chances our opponents give us and therefore cannot move in a positive direction."
The further reaction from the players:
Clemens Fritz:
"We wanted to get a victory in front of the home crowd and celebrate a nice farewell. First off for the players who will be leaving the club, but also as a thank you to the fans who supported us so loyally this season. We players have to question our performances."
Claudio Pizarro:
"Unfortunately we lost today because we did not use our chances. We allowed the opponents a lot of chances and were not concentrated in some situations. I scored two goals. That is very important for me. It's always most important for a striker to score. Unfortunately my goals didn't help much."
Tim Borowski:
"We absolutely wanted to win the game and I wanted to do my part. But you have to say that we had big problems in some situations."
Tim Wiese:
"We made dumb mistakes and then they countered us - that is somehow symptomatic for the whole season."
