That was a black day for the Green-Whites, especially for Assani Lukimya. The defender, who had made an error last weekend to lead to a goal, had two more mistakes and played a role in both of Schalke's goals in the 2-0 defeat.
Understandably, Lukimya didn't want talk about it this time. But his teammates stepped up to the microphones and took responsibility themselves. "Regardless of who makes the mistakes, we win and lose as a team. Every one of us has made mistakes in the past couple weeks which we really paid for," said Werder defender Sokratis. "I am the first guy who will step up for Luki and the team. Blaming people doesn't help at all. Also not looking at the coach. Everyone must give 100 percent here." A fully frustrated Aaron Hunt agreed. "Of course we are just inviting opposing teams to score goals on a regular basis. Luki knows that he made mistakes today. Nobody has to tell him that. But we once again had enough time to show a reaction and get back into the game. But we just don't have the confidence. None of us got back into the game," said Hunt.
Further reaction after the match:
Aaron Hunt: "The defeat was fully okay. That was a very weak second half. Their first goal really took us out of our game. I don't have an explanation for it. That has happened often to us this season."
Thomas Eichin: "We were in the game in the first half but we could not use our chances. Schalke really came out strong in the second half. The individual mistakes in front of our own goal were punished mercilessly and really broke our necks. That helped Schalke onto the road to victory and we were never able to get back into the game."
Thomas Schaaf: "Nothing really happened until the first goal, unfortunately not for us either. We were not able to do more with our chances. We needed to pressure our opponents more. It's really disappointing when you see how we are setting up these goals."
