Three goals in nine minutes, two red cards and lots of questionable refereeing decisions: The 98th North Derby between SV Werder and Hamburg provided fans with plenty of entertainment, but the tense 90 minutes did not end satisfactorily from a Green-Whites point of view with a 3-2 defeat. "The tradition was continued. It was a good, emotional derby. The whole team's performance was much better than last week. But we still have a problem - we still concede too many goals," said head coach Thomas Schaaf after the loss at the official press conference.
WERDER.DE put together further reaction to the match.
Zlatko Junuzovic: "We are not learning from our mistakes and once again gave up two quick goals. Still, we had some good chances but missed out on making it 3-3. Even a man down we still had a chance to equalize."
Thomas Schaaf: "Like so often this season, we didn't reward ourselves. We could have achieved more, the opportunities were there. Shortly after the half we were not as intensive as usual. We just scored one goal too few. We are driving home dissatisfied because we lost."
Clemens Fritz: "This loss hurts. We had high hopes and started the game very well and also took the early lead. After that we allowed them to push us too far back. We need to be further up the pitch. But we also were not the most confident team after the match last week. Once again, we did show some good signs. We have to build on that and do the positive things again next week. But both of those goals shortly after the break cannot happen. It's difficult after such a one-two punch. But even after being behind 3-1, we had good chances. We have to execute our counter-attacks better. We are just lacking the last bit of consistency at the moment and a bit of luck."
Mehmet Ekici: "The defeat is very aggravating. The team has a totally different side. We wanted to pick up something from the very start. But we can't do anything about that now. In the end, we just weren't lucky."
