The emotions needed to be released. After keeping a clean sheet for their third time in six games - and that in of all games the North Derby with Hamburg - the Werder players celebrated the important 2-0 win with their fans.
"We started with the necessary desire and the necessary bite. That could be seen in the build-up to the game. In the first half, we played very well. Everyone wanted the ball, we occupied the spaces very well, made the pitch long, did a good job pressing, started running early without the ball, acted more than reacted. You could see quite a bit how we want to play. As a result of that, our 1-0 goal happened after a really nice play. In the second half, we showed the mentality you need when you come under pressure in a derby. Surely, the team could have given the coaching staff a few quieter minutes if they had played out better a couple of attacks. Luckily it worked out well," said head coach Robin Dutt after the 2-0 win at Hamburg.
WERDR.DE collected reactions to the derby:
Nils Petersen: "There was a lot of pressure on both teams. Hamburg was more unsure than we were. We wanted to build up pressure and make the fans nervous. We did a good job on that. Certainly, our form and luck were on our side when Hamburg were dangerous a couple times in front of our goal. Altogether I had the feeling that we had the football god more on our side."
Clemens Fritz: "The team had to do this today and they came up with the right answer. We were aggressive in tackling and worked unbelievably well together. That was the key to the derby win. We should have finished off the match earlier. That is the only reproach we would have to face."
Aaron Hunt: "That was an important reaction from the team. Everyone took the pitch with passion. We were totally on board from the first minute on. Now I hope that we can find some consistency. With performances like today, we shouldn't have anything to do with relegation. My hope is that we can find some serenity with this victory and not experience so many highs and lows."
