One goal, one point, two losers. The 1-1 draw in the away match in Cologne did not really help SV Werder in their fight for the Europa League spots. A victory over the relegation-threatened Cologne would have been immensely important.
"Of course that is not enough if you have the goal of playing internationally," said Clemens Fritz. "We would have liked to have taken three points but in the end the draw is fair," said Thomas Schaaf. "It was clear that we would be facing an opponent who would demand our all and that Cologne would be highly motivated to improve their own situation. And it was also clear that we would have to hold our own. In the second half we may have survived Cologne's attack but we did not have the calm and continuity to score the decisive goal," added the Werder coach.
Dissatisfaction made the rounds with the rest of Werder's players. Some of them talked to the media.
Thomas Schaaf:
"We did not have the necessary calmness today and didn't do anything after we won the ball. Especially in the final minutes we had a lot of chances but the decisive pass was missing. Cologne made things very difficult for us."
Markus Rosenberg:
"We played badly for 90 minutes so we have to be satisfied with the point in the end. We wanted to get three points but we never found our game and didn't do any better than in the last couple weeks. Besides, we played a lot of long balls which came right back. That led to the fact that we were under pressure."
Klaus Allofs:
"The team was determined but we know that we can play a lot better. Therefore in our situation we cannot be satisfied with just one point. We did well in scoring the goal but didn't have enough actions and made too many passing errors."
Tim Wiese:
"We cannot be satisfied today. It was lucky that it was only 1-1. We were unable to create chances today. We did that one time and the goal was scored. That is too little for our expectations. Our body language is not good, that's extremely important. We have to make sure we go to the pitch with our heads up and willing to go through a wall."
