Head coach Thomas Schaaf pre-warned the media representatives. "I will not be any fun tonight. This was not a pleasant evening and it will be difficult to find something good," sighed the Werder coach after the 5-0 home loss against Borussia Dortmund.
Schaaf then offered an impression into the soul of his team who had just suffered their worst loss since 1987. "The team is sitting in the changing room and is as outraged as I am. Outraged about the situation, outraged about the match, outraged about their own performance. And the players can be outraged. But they also must be ready to show the right reaction. They have deal with it, face up to it. That will be the task in the coming days," said Schaaf.
Schaaf knew pretty much exactly what went wrong with his team. "We were missing something elementary. We pulled back and let our opponents play their game. There was no determination. We did run a lot but did not really go after the ball with intensity. Dortmund were much better than us. We cannot play without this positive aggressiveness. We thought too often that if I play my position that will keep the opponent in check. But that wasn't enough. We have to work against the ball and the opponent. We have to work at that. We have to improve on that because we have seen that we can play better," Schaaf said. The main objective for the coach is to create the proper atmosphere for sensible work. "It's not so easy to just put this kind of match behind you. We will not go crazy now. We will continue to work sensibly and continue to develop our plan."
WERDER.DE gathered other reaction to the match:
Clemens Fritz: "Everything went wrong today. After the good preparations we had some high expectations but we never found our way into the game. That shows that you don't get anything from a good preparation. Maybe we thought that it would keep going like that, but it wasn't the case. But we definitely had too much respect for Dortmund. We had no courage and we lost too many easy balls."
Aaron Hunt: "We had planned on quite a bit from the start but everything today went wrong. Nothing worked from the first to last minute. It was a black day for us. This match will stay with the team for a couple of days. But by the middle of the week we need to get our heads free for the match in Hamburg. That will be another difficult match."
Zlatko Junuzovic: "We continually said beforehand that Dortmund is a good team. But we didn't have any goal chances today. We did a good job at times winning balls in the midfield but then we didn't have places to pass to up front. We were missing the courage and the resolve to take risks. This defeat is a big setback for us. Today you didn't see very much of how intensively we worked in the past days."
Thomas Schaaf: "Actually we started quite well into the match. Parts of the first half were okay. We played pretty good there. But then you allow the first goal on a free kick and we weren't close to the shooter on the second goal otherwise we could have blocked the ball. And there was a click after the third goal and we didn't defend ourselves anymore and just let everything happen."
