As expected the Dortmund stadium was impressive and Werder's string of injury bad luck well known. But Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf did not want any excuses in explaining the 1-0 defeat in Dortmund. "In the end, a loss is a loss. And I don't like it. I don't think the team was in awe. I just don't think we were able to find the necessary solutions for what we needed to do. I compliment the team for not giving up and trying a lot. But that was not our best performance today. If we had played the whole match like we did in the second half then it could have been an interesting game," said the coach. "The Yellow-Blacks are the German champions. And they did not do a bad job today. Congratulations to Dortmund."
More reaction to the game:
Klaus Allofs:
I still have to learn to be positive after a defeat. But of course I did have the feeling now and again that this team did not let themselves get over-rolled. But we must realise that we can do better. If you play passively then it's just a matter of time before you concede a goal. Passiveness does not lead to success. You have to look for chances yourself. With a little more courage we could have accomplished more.
Clemens Fritz:
We always believe in ourselves and did not come here to get beat around. But every team would have a problem with this number of missing players. Two more people were taken away yesterday in the final training and today we also had to replace Basti Prödl. But we have to deal with that. And in light of the personnel problems, we did an orderly job in the second half.
Markus Rosenberg:
We played poorly in the first half. We lost a lot of balls in the midfield and Dortmund could have scored a lot more goals. After the break, we did things better, tried a bit more and got a bit closer. If we had played that way from the beginning, maybe we could have gotten more out of the game.
Sebastian Prödl:
We wanted to stand well and be dangerous on the counter attack. We did not do that well in the first half. In the break we realised what was possible if we played more offensively. We could have gotten more if we had played a bit more courageously because we would have had more chances. We did that better after half-time but were not effective enough.
