It was not the type of game that produces heroes. It was a game in which the whole team shined. There were plenty of faces of the match and as diverse as Werder have played during the fall of 2013.
All three goal scorers - Aaron Hunt, Cedrick Makiadi and Santiago Garcia - tallied for the first time this season. A gutsy head coach sent Davie Selke out for his Bundesliga debut. And the fans were rewarded with a match that was dangerous for one's fingernails, challenged one's blood pressure and resulted in the explosion of happiness.
Read here about the faces of the match:
The winning goal scorer - Santiago Garcia:
The Argentinean is highly regarded by his teammates and the fans. He showed why Sunday evening. There was a good reason he was selected as Volkswagen Man of the Match by over 70 percent of the fans. Zlatko Junuzovic also raved about Garcia. "He is unbelievably emotional. It's totally awesome for the fans when he scores the goal in front of the East Curve and then also celebrates like he did. He just exudes adrenaline. And he doesn't just carry the fans with that but his teammates too. He's an unbelievably important guy," said Junuzovic.
The goal scorer himself called the 86th minute one of the best moments of his still brief Werder career. "I get into good position for the header and the ball just falls to my feet and I hit it over the line. Right in front of our fans. A great feeling! We all just wanted to win today to not lose pace with the upper half of the table. And we did that."
The goal debutant - Cedrick Makiadi:
Cedrick Makiadi believes he had to wait too long for his first goal with Werder. "I had really hoped that it would have come earlier. But better today than never! The goal wasn't really that difficult. The goal was about six inches away. If I had shot that wide, I would have been a regular in every season review show," said Makiadi.
The ice-cold angel - Aaron Hunt:
The deputy captain enjoys the full trust of the coach. Robin Dutt had defended him passionately in the last few weeks of quiet criticism and he was confirmed Sunday evening. Despite missing the penalty against Frankfurt, it was Hunt who once again took on the burden. "He took the responsibility and converted it ice-cold. He is a really important player," said Dutt.
The next rookie - Davie Selke:
Following Martin Kobylanski and Melvyn Lorenzen, Selke is the third debutant from the U23 team to earn his first Bundesliga minutes under Dutt. "He came in and provided a spark with his physical presence and his willingness to run. The spectators reacted immediately and supported him excellently," said Dutt.
