SV Werder's preparations in Jerez de la Frontera ended Friday morning shortly after 11:10 a.m. The downfall of rain shortly after the end of training was a good sign - thank you Jerez, Bremen, we're coming back! The Green-Whites went through 10 days of training in optimal conditions - other than the final session - in southwestern Spain. "The team really went along. I just told them that. We were able to do everything in our program. We were able to go through the tactical elements. Still, we realised that we have a tough task to deal with. We pushed forward step by step in Jerez," head coach Robin Dutt told media members in the last talk while still on the grounds.
The focus in Jerez was predominantly on defence. "We made an adjustment in our defensive work, in the manner in which we want to control the opponents. I think we were able to establish a good foundation for the coming weeks," said Dutt.
Just a few kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean, there were also two test matches as well as battles going on for a number of positions, including the number one between the goal posts. "The test against Bucharest was a clear step forward compared to the beginning of training camp. I was really able to observe a lot of important things against Bucharest," said Dutt looking back at the 1-0 loss against NEC Nijmegen and the 0-0 draw versus Romanian record champions Steaua Bucharest.
The coach would not say if Sebastian Mielitz or Raphael Wolf - the latter who played the last four Bundesliga matches - would play against Eintracht Braunschweig. "They are two different guys with different strengths. Therefore it's more a decision which needs to be well thought out. There will be a talk with Marco Langner next week and then we will decide who is number one."
Werder's coach was also able to use the two daily trainings to get an overview on whom he will line up next Sunday along with ‘Miele' or Wolf. "We had players in most positions who are battling for spots. All of the positions are double covered. I told everyone, give your all next week too," said Dutt. "The young players left a good impression. I am not someone who is reluctant to choose a youngster."
