SV Werder will once again play in the Bundesliga in the 2014-15 season. The Green-Whites' spot in Germany's top flight was secured Sunday afternoon through Hamburg's 3-1 loss at Augsburg as Werder can no longer place in the bottom three. That means the minimum goal of staying in the league was achieved on the 32nd match day despite a defeat at Bayern Munich. "It's okay that the issue is now over with. Our fans also deserve to be in the first division," said Werder manager Thomas Eichin.
But the Werder manager emphasised that avoiding relegation is only an intermediate goal on the way to the season's main goal. "That doesn't change anything about the fact that we still want to concentrate on our goal of 40 points. We can still do it and want to give everything we have to get it done. We need to have two concentrated matches to finish the season," said Eichin. On Saturday 3 May 2014, Hertha Berlin come to Weser Stadium at 3:30 p.m. for the last home match of the season before Werder travel to Bayer Leverkusen for the 2013-14 season's final game on Saturday 10 May 2014 at 3:30 p.m.
Team captain Clemens Fritz meanwhile emphasised the importance of the final two Bundesliga contests. "Keeping the league was the minimum goal, but it's not our only objective. We achieved our intermediary goal two match days before the end of the season and now we want to pick up more points than in the first half and head towards our goal of reaching 40 points. All that is still possible," said Fritz. The 33-year-old added that the team needs to keep their concentration level high to finish off the campaign. "We owe it to our fans in the last home match and in Leverkusen we want to repeat the surprise from December. We have to be fully alert. There is no reason to sit back and relax," said Fritz, who will once again play in the Bundesliga next season after his contract extension.
