Expectations for this Friday night were soooo big, leaving the disappointment clearly written on the faces of all involved with Werder after a 1-0 loss at home. The match against Wolfsburg was supposed to finish off all worries in the relegation fight. But the Green-Whites are stuck in the middle of it after the 1-0 defeat. "You only have to look at the table. It got a lot closer again today. We had it in our own hands to finally make things all clear. But we did not use this chance today," Clemens Fritz told media members. Shortly before midnight, he added: "The nicest birthday present for the coach would have been a victory today. Unfortunately we could not get that for him. That is extremely unfortunate."

Reaction to the game:

Head Thomas Schaaf:
We did not have the conviction in the attack to score. We did have more run of play but could not really create much pressure from it. We were not targeted enough in our attacks and couldn't really cause problems for our opponents with the passing game. We had worked well the past couple of weeks and had done a lot of things better, but we did not reach our goals today.

Manager Klaus Allofs: Last week we did an excellent job in the second half at St. Pauli with our passion and willingness to run. Today we apparently were not ready to give everything we had. We have to know the seriousness of the situation and give more than everything we had. But that was missing today.

Torsten Frings: Of course we are very disappointed because we had planned quite a bit more. We wanted to take the final step and free ourselves. But now we are right back in the middle of it again. We played poorly and just were not dangerous in front of their goal. In the last few games we created numerous chances, that didn't work today. But Wolfsburg defended cleverly and did not allow very much.

Per Mertesacker: We tried for 90 minutes to continue the positive trend from the past few weeks but that did not work 100 percent. Wolfsburg defended very well and scored the goal at the right time. So they really never had to open up and we had a hard time getting our chances.
