In the end, only the result mattered. SV Werder did show a motivated performance in stages in the last away game of the year, but they still lost handily 4-1 in Mönchengladbach. "Up until their goals, we held our own, believed in ourselves and concentrated on our own game. That wasn't too bad, but after that we were too naive in the tackles and reacted instead of acting. We have to improve on that," said head coach Viktor Skripnik.
WERDER.DE went into the mixed zone after the match and compiled the most important comments.
Viktor Skripnik: "We are in the cellar, are last, so of course we're all very dissatisfied. It's difficult to get out of there but we have to give everything we have one more time against Dortmund for three points. We want to give something back to the fans. Then thankfully we have the winter break in which we can work in peace and prepare meticulously."
Zlatko Junuzovic: "We began well and fought hard for the first half hour and then we fall behind in a manner typical of the last few weeks. We basically invite them in for the goal. It was just too easy. And we were behind from then on. We have the quality but we keep weakening ourselves through individual errors."
Philipp Bargfrede: "Up until the deficit, we were playing well. Then the penalty took us out of our rhythm and ended up leading us to the defeat. We have to see to it that we maintain the ball better and not have to race after it so much and play more compact. There's a very important match on Saturday and we absolutely have to get points there."
Thomas Eichin: "The loss aggravates me because Gladbach were not exactly unbeatable today. We could have picked up something here. We had a good tactical game plan and good attitude but we did the decisive things wrong today. Gladbach waited and punished us that we didn't score the second goal."
