Werder head coach Robin Dutt and midfielder Cedrick Makiadi had imagined their return to their old stomping grounds quite differently. After a disappointing showing, Bremen lost their away match against SC Freiburg 3-1.
"There was nothing in the back, nothing in the middle and nothing up front," was how Werder manager Thomas Eichin summed up the match in his home town. The 48-year-old had to let out his frustration before going into detail. "We just had the wrong tactics. While we went for it in the attack, nobody really came up from the back. That didn't give us any chances for challenges in the midfield. In the second half we tried to correct that. But we got hit with a counter-attack and promptly conceded the 2-0 goal. After that it was difficult. We lacked the courage. It was a poor performance," said Eichin.
WERDER.DE compiled further reaction:
Robin Dutt: "That was a very week game. We made the pitch too big instead of keeping it small and thereby applying pressure. That allowed Freiburg to play their game. In the second half we wanted to correct the game and play with forechecking. And then we didn't create any goal chances and they hit us with a counter attack. The victory was clear and considerable for Freiburg and highly deserved. The only positive is that we didn't hang our heads after falling behind 3-0."
Cedrick Makiadi: "Our tactics didn't work out in the first half. There was too big of a gap between our rows. In the second half we wanted do things better, attack earlier but then ran into a Freiburg counter attack and conceded two more goals. In the end, Freiburg deserved to win."
Aaron Hunt: "There were a lot of reasons why we lost the match today. We played poorly, didn't get into our pressing and there was always something missing. So we deserved to lose like that. Unfortunately we couldn't build on where we had finished against Stuttgart. Maybe a couple of players were already too confident."
Zlatko Junuzovic: "We never get into our game. We wanted to pressure them but were never able to prevent Freiburg's long balls."
