The fact that Werder Bremen returned home from their 3-2 loss with empty hands depended mainly on their poor first half. "We had a start which was not exhilarating," said Thomas Schaaf about the Green-Whites' early 2-0 deficit. "You kind of got scared that this would really get out of control." But the game was close in the end thanks to an improved showing after the break. "I am satisfied that we caught ourselves and came out of the changing rooms strong, concentrating on the things we talked about. That's why it was a very interesting game in the end," said Schaaf.

Werder's reaction after the final game of the season:

Tim Wiese:
"After 10 minutes I thought I was going to give up eight goals today. We played horribly in the first half. Luckily that got better in the second half. Now we are happy that we can mark off the season."

Marko Arnautovic: "It was very difficult coming back from the 3-0 deficit and scoring the two goals. It was a bit unlucky that we didn't get the third one - ‘Lutscher' (Frings) missed a penalty and my shot unfortunately went off the crossbar."

Manager Klaus Allofs: "Once again we started the game in a doze. Luckily we turned the corner and in the end we could have gotten a lot more. All told, only the final 30 minutes were good and nothing else. It is difficult to win a game when you show two totally different faces."

Captain Torsten Frings: "We played with our absolute last players. We couldn't have put in many more players. Therefore it's to be expected that we have some problems. It was frustrating that I missed a penalty."

Marko Marin: "There is nothing worse than starting a game like that with two early goals. In the end, it was too bad that we couldn't finish off with a 3-3 draw."
