Head coach Robin Dutt complained last week about the disastrous mentality of his Werder team but he couldn't criticise them in that regard Saturday afternoon. His men displayed good motivation against Borussia Dortmund, going tough and determined into challenges and being generally more present than in Augsburg. Still, the Green-Whites were clearly beaten in the end.
"A 5-1 defeat hurts of course, but it hurts today in other places that last week. The attitude is not a main point of criticism today. The team really threw themselves into the challenges and also didn't shy away when they were trailing 4-0. Besides, for the first time in a long time we finally had a positive percentage of challenges won," Dutt said in the mixed zone of Bremen's Weser Stadium. "The difference today was that Dortmund raced forward after winning balls and we lack this quality at the moment."
WERDER.DE collected reaction after the match:
Thomas Eichin: "That was a difference in class. We produced too many errors which Dortmund took advantage of excellently. You cannot gloss over this. Now we have to make sure that we get past this defeat. We will be bombarded with quite a bit in the coming weeks. We have to fight hard that it gets better. We have to be strong enough and cannot pay attention to what goes on around us."
Nils Petersen: "That was a highly deserved victory for Dortmund, who simply played at a different level. Our effort was okay but we are missing too much."
Ludovic Obraniak: "Of course I imagined my first match differently. I am very disappointed right now. We played against one of the best teams in Europe. Dortmund were better than us in all phases of the game. They were better physically and tactically. Still, the result doesn't reflect our week of training. We worked intensively and good. We need to do that next week as well because the three points against Gladbach are the only thing that counts."
Aaron Hunt: "If you lose 5-1, you don't have many arguments. It may sound dumb but we played a better match than in the last couple weeks. Still, it's not enough to play well for only 20 minutes. We need to be alert a full 90 minutes. We conceded a lot of goals, that doesn't bode well for us. Once again, we are frustrated and disappointed."
