The 14-match winless streak is over. Finally! And not only that, Werder's 1-0 victory over Eintracht Braunschweig was their first season opening win on the road since 2006 (4-2 win over Hannover). After the match, it was clear to everyone involved how important the victory was.
Despite all the happiness about the three points to open the season, the club leaders knew realistically how to judge the performance. The Green-Whites still have a long road ahead of themselves. WERDER.DE collected reaction after the match.
Clemens Fritz: "We just worked really well and of course we are happy that this endless winless streak is finally over. We had a very good game for the first 60 minutes and the opponent didn't get into the game until after hitting the crossbar."
Robin Dutt: "The team stuck in there until the final second and gave everything they had. Of course you need a little bit of luck but we just struck at the right moment. We fought until the end today after working very hard the last few weeks and really came up with a good team spirit. And we also deserved this a bit. I am happy for the club that we finally won again. It was a small step, but an important one."
Thomas Eichin: "We finally won again. Before the first match day, many had us picked as a relegated team. The mood was extremely negative, which didn't make sense to me. It will be a hard season for us. During the week, we tried to go into this match positively. The team was cool today and fought. It's always difficult to play against a promoted team right away. These three points just do us good and are worth a lot."
Zlatko Junuzovic: "We are all extremely relieved. In the last couple months we often weren't rewarded for our performance. That was different today. We had the better game from the beginning and let Braunschweig back into the match in the second half through individual errors. Braunschweig then had their fans behind them again. We have to improve on that. It was a dirty victory. But that's exactly what we wanted."
