In the end, the tears wouldn't stop. After the final whistle of his farewell match, the emotions got the best of Ailton. During his farewell speech to the Werder fans, the round Brazilian looked back on six years along the Weser, the double win and lots of old memories. None of the 40,000 spectators left the match early. "I have played here a lot, ran a lot and scored a lot of goals. I travelled a lot around the world but my heart only had space for one club, SV Werder Bremen," Ailton said to a loud cheer.

The 41-year-old got goosebumps thinking about the unique atmosphere. "In football, you get forgotten quite quickly, but that won't happen to you here in Bremen. It's incredible. Ten years after I left, the whole stadium is there for Ailton and this team. I will always carry in my heart the team from back then, this club and this moment," said Ailton.

A number of former companions, teammates and friends enjoyed the afternoon as well. WERDER.DE listened around after the match and compiled some reaction.

The perfect farewell

Valerien Ismael: "It was an awesome feeling meeting up with the really old buddies. In the changing room, we laughed about a lot of old stories. There was an incredible atmosphere in the stadium. That was pure goosepumps."

Thomas Schaaf: "That was a very nice afternoon, which brought up a lot of memories. There were a lot of players who had a big impact on Werder and it was nice to see everybody again. It was very emotional for Ailton."

Tim Wiese: "It was very nice to come back to his living room. For Toni, it was a very emotional day and all of us had a lot of fun to be able to play in front of a sold-out house."

Mario Basler: "It was great. A great event, perfectly done. For Ailton, it was very emotional but that was clear from the start. I always like to come back to Bremen and today it was super and was really a lot of fun."

Ailton: "Many thanks to all the people who are here today. But I especially want to thank two people. One of them is Julio Cesar. And then I have two fathers, one in Brazil and one in Germany. And that is Thomas Schaaf. It was a fantastic day for me. Even the trip to the stadium was absolutely amazing. Lots of people cheered us on, that was unique. I was already close to tears then and thought that it couldn't have been better. But it was just great to be in front of the fans."
