You wouldn't have wanted to be the LED ad boards at 7:21 p.m. as they had to hold up 85kg of pure emotion and joy. After scoring the game-winning goal against Hannover, Sebastian Prödl jumped onto the board in front of the Werder fan block, stretched out his arms and celebrated with the fans and his teammates after getting three crucial points in the relegation fight. "I am happy that I scored the goal. Those are emotions that I will never forget in my life. It's just amazing to score the goal and then run over to the fan curve," said an excited Prödl to various microphones and recorders after the 2-1 victory.
Werder's Austrian international also scored five days earlier in the home match against Wolfsburg - also with a header. But that goal didn't mean nearly as much as this one, in which he followed his instincts more than anything else. "Usually I head to the near post on corners. But we had noticed that Hannover were strong at the near post. That's why I just tried in the middle," said the defensive boss. "Of course we practice these kinds of set pieces in training too. It was a little bit lucky that it worked out but that makes it even better."
Clemens Fritz played a decisive role in the situation before the goal. Playing in his 251st Bundesliga match, the Werder captain sensed the goal. "I predicted it beforehand. Before the corner, I went over to Basti and told him that he will hit it home. And he did it. You can tell that the agreements we decide on work tremendously well," Fritz said with a grin.
Even though Fritz and Co. really celebrated the three points against a direct challenger, all involved were aware that they have not achieved anything just yet. "Because of the other results, we knew that we could open a big lead with a victory. But it's not over with. Anybody who thinks that is crazy. We are in a good situation. We kind of have the ‘pole position' but the race still needs to be run," said Prödl.
But what's certain is that the Austrian will definitely be among the leaders in the race for the most emotional goal celebration of the team.
