Away victories are fun. And the win over the second half's best team Nuremberg went down nice and smooth. The three points allowed Werder to take a big step away from the relegation zone and also conjured up plenty of happy faces. Per Mertesacker really let loose his relief. "That was a very important message. Before the game against Freiburg we were actually second to last. Now we have freed ourselves a bit. But we are not yet through," said the defensive ace, who then let out a smile and added: "But I am far from seeing negative things at the moment. I am just looking through green-coloured glasses right now and enjoying the moment."
WERDER.DE looked around in the Nuremberg mixed zone and found other exhausted but happy faces, who talked about very realistic estimations about the current table situation. Here a selection:
Tim Borowski:
"We still just have to focus on us getting points. If we lose the next home match (against Stuttgart), then we are right back in the mess again. Klaus Allofs said last week that we could be fighting off relegation until the last game day. We still have to assume that, then we won't make any fatal mistakes."
Torsten Frings:
"We have to continue the trend because it's still very, very close down there. If you lose just once then everyone is right back with you and we're back down there. We have to repeat our defensive showing from today. I never feared that Nuremberg would score a goal. We really didn't allow any goal chances. All you have to do is look at how their goal was scored."
Klaus Allofs:
"Against Gladbach just one point; against Nuremberg, who came in on a hot streak, this kind of victory. That shows us that everything is still possible, that we have to be fully concentrated in every game. We haven't really gotten the job done until we are really out from down there. We can't give the all-clear yet. The season is unsatisfying regardless because we started with entirely different expectations."
Thomas Schaaf:
"The three points are very nice but it was not just about the table today but rather confirming that the work from the past weeks has taken effect and that everyone sees that it's worthwhile if you work hard. But I don't know if we have really found our groove. We really shouldn't start making any big plans again."
