Werder centre back Sebastian Prödl underwent successful surgery Monday afternoon. The defensive ace had more detailed examinations Monday morning at specialists in Bremen and then was operated upon in the afternoon at the Bremen Diako clinic.
The procedure, which was headed by Dr. François Lanners, repaired a number of breaks in the nose and upper jaws on both sides. Werder team doctor Götz Dimanski was in continual contact with Prödl and the handling medical staff and was informed about the success of the operation afterwards. "That was not an easy procedure. But there were no complications. Sebastian will remain in Diako for a couple days for observations. He is in very experienced hands," said Dimanski.
Elsewhere, the person responsible for the facial injury, Dorge Kouemaha, has apologised to Prödl. The Kaiserslautern striker asked for and received the cell phone number of the Werder defender directly after the game. "Then I called him but he couldn't talk that much. Therefore I sent him a message that read: ‘Hold out, I am sorry.' He answered and said he didn't blame me, these things happen in sports. That could have happened the other way around," the Lautern player told the sports show Flutlicht on SWR.
