Now things are getting serious for Werder players as the first competitive match of the new season nears on Saturday 30 July 2011 at 3:30 p.m. The opponent in the first round of the German DFB Cup is third division side Heidenheim. And the Green-Whites expect a victory as head coach Thomas Schaaf has main a clear goal for the cup competition: "We want to go back to Berlin."
Werder naturally will not underestimate their opponents, who are expecting about 10,000 spectators in their own stadium. "We know about them because of the Heidenheim games of our U23 team in the third division. But we have also done our homework and observed them a few times. They have played good opponents and proved themselves, just missing better results," said Schaaf. But Schaaf's team are clearly the favourites and want to live up to that status and advance to the next round.
