In the first match this season against Mainz, Claudio Pizarro scored his 150th goal of his Bundesliga career. But the most successful foreign goal scorer in Bundesliga history cannot remember this round number. "Oh, that's a higher number now. Have I really scored that many goals? I didn't know that I reached that mark in the first game. Of course it's my goal to increase my total even more. And it would be best to do it against Mainz," said the Werder striker after Wednesday's training.
After a two-week suspension, head coach Thomas Schaaf can once again plan on having Pizarro in his line-up. Captain Clemens Fritz is also happy that the Peruvian is back on board. "Claudio is very important for the team. He is an excellent player but we need him as a character," said Fritz.
Pizarro has scored eight more goals since hitting number 150 against Mainz on the 11th game day. And he will be shooting for goals number 159 and 160 against Mainz this Saturday. "That would be another personal success," said Pizarro. "But it's unbelievably important for us to win. But I will need the support from the team. It was extremely difficult to watch the last two matches from the stands. I was so nervous and excited. It's great to be part of the team again. I am really looking forward to it," said Pizarro.
Fritz also knows that Werder cannot only rely on the Peruvian as they fight to qualify for the Europa League. "Everyone must take over some responsibility. It doesn't matter who scores goals. But the chances are naturally better with Pizarro," said Fritz.
