When Claudio Pizarro danced around his opposing defenders and then chipped the ball over goalkeeper Christian Wetklo to make it 1-1 in the 29th minute, the odd Mainz player or fan may have thought "Oh not Pizarro again". That would be understandable since the Peruvian has scored 10 goals in nine Bundesliga matches against Mainz. And his goal on Saturday was his 150th in the Bundesliga. "This mark means a lot to me. It is not easy to score 150 goals in the Bundesliga," said "Piza", who believes every single goal is something special.
Pizarro has scored eight of those 150 goals this season. "I feel really good at the moment," said the 33-year-old into the cameras. "For me it's always important to have a good preparation in the summer. I did that this year. I feel like I'm 21."
Head coach Thomas Schaaf and manager Klaus Allofs both praised the performance of the Bundesliga's all-time leading foreign-born scorer. "You saw once again how important Claudio is for us," said Schaaf. "Claudio played a world class game. He was everywhere. Up front he was open, in the midfield he showed the quality of a playmaker and he won some important balls on defence as well," said Allofs. When asked if the goal scorer had received any special present from the club for the special goal, Allofs smirked and said: "Yeah he did, we all shook his hand."
