Petersen passed the obligatory physical and signed a contract with Freiburg on Monday. He bid farewell to his teammates after the home victory against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.
Petersen transferred from Bayern Munich to the Green-Whites at the beginning of the 2012-13 season. The 1.88m striker was initially in Bremen on loan but then was fully acquired. Petersen played 69 times for Werder in the Bundesliga, scoring 18 goals. He also played three times in the German Cup.
