When the ball hit the back of the net in the 93rd minute, it ended a perfect derby afternoon for Nils Petersen. After having earlier scored his first goal in 1,366 minutes, the Werder striker scored his second goal of the afternoon to make it 2-0 and give the Green-Whites a very important victory.
"I already had one 100 percent chance all alone in front of Rene Adler in the second half and I would have never forgiven myself if Hamburg had scored the equaliser. The game was over after the goal!" said Petersen. The celebrations directly in front of the Werder fans were wild and the team wanted nobody to score the goals more than the striker. "I have sensed that the past few weeks and months as everyone was slapping me on the shoulder encouragingly even though I just didn't score. I still gave my all for my team and today I was rewarded with the assists from Clemens Fritz and Theo Gebre Selassie."
Teammates weren't the only ones the 24-year-old had to answer when asked about when he would finally score again after his brace against SC Freiburg on 16 February. "Oh, I always had to say something, even at home. I had to keep explaining to friends, my family, my girlfriend and also myself why I hadn't scored. And now that is over," said Petersen.
