Nils Petersen was unsatisfied as he headed toward the Werder changing room on Wednesday. The bitter 5-0 against Borussia Dortmund is still eating at the striker. He was unsatisfied with the Green-Whites' performance but also his own. "I know that the fans were disappointed about my not scoring. I don't purposely shoot the ball wide. I will work on scoring more goals again," promised Petersen after the morning training session. He continued with a smile, saying: "Statistics-wise, I score on every fifth chance. I missed four against Dortmund. So it should work out again against Hamburg."
Looking deeper at the statistics shows that Petersen is definitely playing well as the Wernigerode native has scored seven goals and has four assists, making him the team's top scorer. But Petersen is not satisfied and against Hamburg he would like to "do my part so that we can be successful in the end. With fight, with efficiency, with passion, with emotions and body language."
Should SV Werder win the 98th league showdown with Hamburg, it would be the Green-Whites' fourth straight derby victory (see below left). Petersen did his part in the last win as he scored his first goal for Werder in the 67th minute to make it 2-0. "It was an awesome feeling. And of all times, scoring in the derby was something special. The victory was very important for the team after we had been bounced from the German DFB Cup and lost in Dortmund," recalled the 24-year-old.
Petersen can once again count on support off the pitch. "My parents, girlfriend and neighbours will be at the stadium. They were at the first match in Bremen. That could be a good omen. I hope that we can play similarly successful on Sunday," said the player on loan from Bayern Munich.
Petersen and his teammates definitely want to forget the disaster against Dortmund, because he doesn't want to experience something like that again on Sunday. "I could not look the fans in their eyes on Saturday. We were really hit hard with the defeat. It's hurts because we know what Werder means for the city and the people here in Bremen. That cannot be repeated," said Petersen.
