Nils Petersen's goal scoring record away from home isn't too shabby. In 15 matches on the road, the Werder striker has scored six goals. But he has hit the back of the net just once at Weser Stadium this season - the goal to make it 3-1 against 1899 Hoffenheim. Was it a goal at exactly the right time? The Green-Whites' next opponents this Saturday are none other than the record champions Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena - which is always a trip to the past for the former Munich player.
"If Bayern have a bad day and we have a sensational one, then it's possible for us there," said the 25-year-old confidently. Petersen knows that he and the team must have a top performance to pick up a point in Munich. "There is a lot of speculation about whether we will play against Munich's supposed B-team. There is no B-team in Munich. All of the players who will play on Saturday want to play the return leg match against Madrid, regardless if they are starters or not. It will be a difficult match regardless of which Bayern team we play," said Petersen. But there is always hope for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. "Three or four teams have already shown how it's done. We have to give our all, go into the challenges and cannot let them play their game. And we need to use our few chances in the right situations."
The striker played one season with Bayern between 2011 and 2012, appearing in a total of 15 matches across three competitions and scoring four goals. It's only natural that Petersen talks of a "special match" and he still has contact to his former team. "It's important for me to maintain the contact to Munich," said the striker, who is happy to have scored last weekend at Weser-Stadium.
All told, the 25-year-old can still improve on his scoring totals. And Petersen knows that. His seven goals in 26 matches are four fewer than last season. And he talked about his goals for the rest of the season. "As a striker you always want to score more goals than the previous season, that's clear. At least one more this season - that would be good." He still has three chances for that. And a goal in any of the three matches would be special, the striker admitted. "In Munich, I am facing my former club. That will always be a special match for me. Scoring at home against Berlin would be great too. That's the last home match, the stadium will surely be sold out. I could add on to my goal against Hoffenheim in front of our own fans. And I have never scored in Leverkusen," said Petersen.
