Nils Petersen is back at team training. Five weeks after suffering a partial ligament tear in his right knee, the 24-year-old striker did not really leave the impression that his injury is still on his mind. He went into every tackle and showed no hesitation with his shots.
"For me, it's a wonderful feeling to train again with the team. Usually it's nothing special. But when are not injured at all for more than a year and then have to sit out so long, then it's an unusual situation only being able to watch," said Petersen after Wednesday's session.
Whether or not Werder's number 24 can play a role in the Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim (Saturday 30 November 2013, 3:30 p.m.) depends on head coach Robin Dutt. "It's the coach's decision if I am in the squad for the next game. I have a maximum three sessions to prove myself. Until then, I will try to get myself 100 percent fit," said Petersen. The striker had actually set the goal of returning to the squad by the next home match against Bayern Munich on 7 December 2013. There is one reason, according to Petersen, that he has been able to return so much earlier than expected. "The medical department here really did a great job and played a big role in me being able to train without any pain now," said Petersen.
Petersen also didn't have any problems Wednesday morning after the first stress test. The ligament didn't pinch up at all or hurt. Nils and the rest of the team are back at it Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
