Mateo Pavlovic certainly imagined his start in the Bundesliga differently. The Croatian was thrown into the deep end of the Bundesliga waters with Werder down 2-0 after a red card for Sebastian Prödl. In the end, he could not stop Bremen's 6-1 loss at Bayern Munich. "I was happy that I was able to make my debut. But the result was a disaster," said Pavlovic.
The winter acquisition has been in northern Germany for a good two months. He has not only tried to integrate himself in training from the first day on but also off the pitch as he made it a high priority to learn German. "Of course I learned all the football terms first," said the Croatian in German. He said he can even speak to his teammates a bit now and can even answer a couple questions in interviews.
The coaching staff speaks German but there haven't been any communication difficulties. "Mateo has really been very concentrated on his tasks and has tried to play his part very quickly. He has some strong qualities like quickness, endurance, dedication, a good game in the air and he goes into challenges well," said Schaaf about the 22-year-old. The coach said Pavlovic is definitely a candidate for the starting line-up this weekend. "We hope that he can call up his training performances in the game now and we have faith in him."
