Two goals conceded in the first 10 minutes - Robin Dutt and his players had imagined the start of their match against VfL Wolfsburg entirely different. The Green-Whites had barely taken the pitch and they were already chasing a deficit - in the end unsuccessfully. Despite Sebastian Prödl pulling a goal back, SV Werder lost 3-1 at home to the Wolves. "We lost the match at the beginning. We just weren't awake. And Wolfsburg took advantage of their chances. It is bitter and it hurts," said a disappointed Prödl after the final whistle.

"I cannot explain why we gave up those two goals at the beginning. We knew of the importance of this match and now we have to accept the criticism. It's absolutely legitimate," said Cedrick Makiadi, who was subbed in shortly before the break for the injured Felix Kroos. But the midfielder also looked forward to the coming challenges. "Now we need to work through this loss and keep our heads up," added Makiadi.

WERDER.DE compiled the most important reaction about the match:

Aaron Hunt: "We are all very frustrated and disappointed today. The bad first 15 minutes were certainly the main reason for the absolutely deserved defeat. We sleep-walked through the beginning of the game. Then of course it's difficult in our situation and against such a strong opponent. It just wasn't our match. We especially struggled with our own ball possession."

Robin Dutt: "We never really showed a reaction today. Conceding a goal off a corner can always happen, but it's very bitter if it happens in the first few minutes. I thought I wasn't seeing things right. And I was even more aggravated that the next action led to another goal. That basically closed the door on us. We really had to deal with that, we were all shocked - the players and spectators. We opened the door a little bit with Basti Prödl's goal and tried to push it open in the second half with more fight. But we couldn't convert our chances. But, the fact that the team nearly equalised after an almost hopeless situation is a big plus. The mentality gives us some hope."

Thomas Eichin: "After falling behind 2-0, we had chances, did better in challenges and played with a lot of dedication. We exerted a lot of effort to come back, tried a lot - you can't accuse the team of that - but it just wasn't enough when you don't use your opportunities. We really didn't need this kind of match. We invited the guests to the goals and our missed chances were just deadly today against a classy team like Wolfsburg. We have to stop making these mistakes and be more effective up front."
