"Werder Bremen will offer him a position in training to become a coach with the necessary licenses," Allofs added. It remains unclear if Frings will remain in Bremen next season in this function. "Torsten has not really dealt with it intensively yet. We expect his decision in the coming days. We would also offer him the chance to become a coach if he decided to continue his active career with another club," said Allofs.
Schaaf agreed with his manager. "Torsten was here many years with heart and soul and gave everything he had for Werder Bremen. We considered everything with this decision and had many talks with him. I am of the same opinion as Klaus Allofs that we take this step now," said Schaaf.
Frings transferred from Alemannia Aachen to the Weser in January 1997and played 326 times for Werder in the Bundesliga with a break between 2002 and 2005. There are only eight players in Bremen history who have played more matches for Werder than Frings. During the past season, the 34-year-old Frings passed all-time greats Jonny Otten, Thomas Wolter and Frank Neubarth in the number of Bundesliga appearances for the Green-Whites. Since Frank Baumann retired, "Lutscher" - as teammates call Frings - wore the Werder captain's armband.
He scored 36 goals for Werder and won the 1999 and 2009 German Cup titles under Schaaf. In addition, Frings reached the UEFA Cup final with Werder in 2009. The midfielder also played 79 times for the German national team, taking part in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and 2004 and 2008 European Championships.
