After the 1-1 draw in Nuremberg, Werder players headed out onto their Christmas holidays. The entire team has about two and a half weeks off to relax and recover. And the players will be spending their time as follows:

Clemens Fritz and Sebastian Prödl will be heading to London along with former Werder player Peter Niemeyer to visit former Green-Whites defender and captain Per Mertesacker in the British capital. "I am happy to finally see Per again. London is always worthwhile," said Mertesacker's successor as captain Fritz.

Christmas in times of the festive "Christmas tree diamond"
After that, Fritz will travel to Erfurt and spend the holidays with his family. Head coach Thomas Schaaf will also spend his holidays in classical fashion. "We celebrate Christmas very traditionally in our family with a decorated Christmas tree, delicious Christmas dinner and the whole program: poems, Christmas stories and we also sing of course. Though I kind of hold back a bit there," grinned the Werder coach.

Marko Arnautovic will be seeking warmer weather as the Austrian and wife Sarah will be relaxing a few days in Dubai. Their daughter Emilia will be staying behind with Arnautovic's in-laws so that the young parents can enjoy some peace and quiet alone.

Arnautovic may run into fellow midfielder Aaron Hunt, who will also be vacationing in the Arab emirate, though only until December 25. Afterwards, Hunt and his wife, 26-year-old Semra, have two Christmas parties to attend. "We always celebrate the season in two different cultures," said the Turkish native Semra. "In my family there are always a lot of specialties from Turkey."

Nils Petersen also plans on heading out for a well-deserved vacation before coming back in time for the celebrations back home. Werder's top goal scorer will first enjoy the Austrian Alps before returning to his family in the Harz region. "The house will be full and there will be delicious food. I hope that I can relax a bit with my family before things kick off again with the training camp," said Petersen.
