Werder fans with tickets for the away match against St. Pauli can breathe a sigh of relief as the game will take place in front of fans. After the game against Schalke had to be abandoned, the German Football Federation (DFB) sports court ordered following an oral hearing that Bundesliga club St. Pauli host their first home match of the 2011-12 season in a stadium at least 50 kilometres outside of Hamburg. In addition, no more than 12,500 spectators plus a 10 percent contingent for away fans (1,250 spectators) could attend this home game.
Werder manager Klaus Allofs welcomed the decision. "It is the best solution from a sports standpoint. We would not have seen it as an advantage to have no fans at all. It is good for the fans who didn't have anything to do with all this, that they are not penalised. We are especially happy that our supporters can back us in this important game," said Allofs.
The Bundesliga match between St. Pauli and Schalke on 1 April 2011 had to be abandoned by refereed Deniz Aztekin shortly before the end of full time with Schalke leading 2-0 after linesman Thorsten Schiffner was struck in the neck with a plastic cup of beer in the 87th minute. The cup was thrown from the Hamburg fan section of the grandstands.
