When the Werder players leave for their trip home to Bremen Thursday afternoon, the hierarchy within the team will have slightly changed. The youngsters have caught up and the returnees have worked themselves back into the mix, leaving the battle for spots even more heated.

"Training camps always offer the chance to play yourself into the foreground and some have used that," said manager Klaus Allofs, who sees new alternatives in the full back and attacker positions. "Regardless if it's Thy, Füllkrug, Boenisch or Hartherz, now we have a couple more alternatives. This should be just the beginning. We need competition at all positions."

The competition for starting spots in the midfield has received a new impulse. Among those who profited from the training camp in Belek were Mehmet Ekici and the big surprise Tom Trybull. Werder's sports bosses were happy to see that both new acquisitions from the summer are moving forward even more in their development. "It is important to see that the team is moving away from passiveness and showing more activity. That goes especially for Memo (Ekici)," said Schaaf looking back at the week in Turkey. "He is taking more responsibility and his actions are much more effective," added the coach, who also confirmed Trybull's big step forward.

Before leaving for northern Germany, Schaaf also looked back at the conditions surrounding the training camp in Belek. "You have to say that the weather caused a lot of problems. I wish we had one more test match. I hope now that we can continue to train in a reasonable manner, that we don't get any snow. But that doesn't look like it's the case."
