Levent Aycicek had to wait two years before he finally experienced the starting whistle on the pitch with the Werder professional team. But the 20-year-old talent celebrated his debut in the starting line-up in the German Cup match against Chemnitzer FC.
And the talent showed he could hold his own in a difficult situation, playing a solid match until being subbed out after 81 minutes. The youngster's Bundesliga premiere was also not too bad as he entered the match against Borussia Dortmund during the 2013-14 season and scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 5-1 defeat.
Aycicek's performances with the U23 team in the Regionalliga Nord hinted at good things with seven goals and seven assists in 10 appearances this season. "Levent was a very dominant player in the U23s, a leader," said Viktor Skripnik, the former U23 coach who took over the Werder professional team at the beginning of the week. "It was a nice feeling to be in the starting line-up," said the 20-year-old after his premiere.
Aycicek himself did not over exaggerate the situation. "Chemnitz is from the third division. There will be different opponents in the Bundesliga. In general, the tempo will be a lot higher. I have to get used to that," said the youngster. It's unclear if he will get that chance on Saturday in Mainz. "The fact that I decided for him in the cup doesn't automatically mean he it has to be the same on Saturday," said his old and new coach.
