In just half a year, Sebastian Mielitz has more than doubled his number of matches. The 23-year-old keeper was promoted to the number one between the posts for SV Werder Bremen at the beginning of the 50th Bundesliga season. After 17 matches in the first half of the season, Mielitz has appeared in a total of 32 contests for the Green-Whites. According to the goalkeeper rankings in the kicker magazine, "Miele" ranks second best in the league behind only German national team keeper Manuel Neuer. And Mielitz has deserved the praise of his head coach Thomas Schaaf. "Miele has done a great job. He is a great guy. He has absolutely earned the trust. I can only congratulate him," said Schaaf about the performances of his young keeper.
After the transfer of Tim Wiese to 1899 Hoffenheim, Miele took over as Green-Whites keeper. It was to be the first season of him being number one, giving his home debut in his new status in the North Derby against Hamburg. "That experience gave me a lot of euphoria and motivation. It was my nicest moment," said "Miele" looking back to the 2-0 victory.
He had to head over to the fence after that - the Werder fans wanted it. "That was always something for Tim Wiese. I don't want to copy him. But it's nice to celebrate with the fans. I liked doing that," said the 23-year-old, who has a "very good relationship" with his predecessor Wiese.
Mielitz has been along the Weser for more than seven years. He came to the boarding school in Bremen as a 15-year-old from Energie Cottbus. And he has started since this summer. But Werder's new number one wants more. "I still have a long way to go with Werder. I would like to stay the number one with Werder for many more years," said Mielitz.
