While others were lying in the sun, some Werder players really were playing a game last Monday. They were not held up by holidays and summer break as they accepted the invitation from teammate Per Mertesacker to play for the "Mertesacker and Pocher" team for a good cause against the "Friends of Robert Enke". Werder was the main attraction of the event, which included Green-Whites Marko Marin, Tim Borowski, Clemens Fritz and Wolfgang Rollf. Per Mertesacker was in the starting line-up but was substituted as expected shortly after kick-off by his brother. It was a substitution which Mertesacker didn't mind. "I am really happy that everything worked out. The spectators came out in good numbers as in the years past; we had a lot of helping hands for the organisation; and I can thank two wonderful teams who really offered up some good football," said the organiser, who was able to hand over numerous donation checks in five figures from sponsors to his Per Mertesacker Foundation...

At the front of the line were the Werder players. Clemens Fritz left early from his holidays in the United States. "I landed this morning and drove directly here. But I'm not worried about keeping up with them. I am even ahead of schedule with my running schedule," said Fritz before of the game. And he held his word. In extra time, he had a long sprint and scored to make it 5-5 against Walter Junghans (see WERDER.TV film) and push the game into penalties where the 'Merte' team of Elton, Oliver Pocher, Guido Cantz, handball legend Christian Schwarzer and former Werder player Ivan Klasnic won 14-13 in the end.
