"We have a good chance of getting together 11 players for Saturday," said head coach Thomas Schaaf after training Tuesday morning 13 March 2012 with a slight bit of sarcasm. After all, he had just had training with only 11 players on the pitch for 60 minutes.
The list of players missing from training was long, including Marko Marin (thigh strain), Marko Arnautovic (torn knee ligament), Claudio Pizarro (syndesmosis ligament issue in ankle), Francois Affolter (sick), Zlatko Junuzovic (calf problems) as well as long-time injured players Naldo, Aaron Hunt and Tim Borowski. And a new name joined the list on Tuesday in Philipp Bargfrede.
Werder's No. 44 is dealing with a bruise and only completed an individual training in the morning. "The odd player will be able to return on Wednesday. Sometimes it just takes two or three days before you can practice again," said Schaaf about his injured group of players. Bargfrede, Affolter and Junuzovic are expected to be back at training on Wednesday. "I have pain in both my left and right calves. A bruise developed in the right one and it was treated with electro therapy and massages. But it's not really that bad. I went running this morning so it was okay. I think that I will be able to get back into training tomorrow," said "Zladdi". Schaaf said Pizarro's return might not come until Thursday.
Clemens Fritz meanwhile was dealing with some pain in his underarm shortly before the end of training. Werder's captain fell unluckily on his elbow in a challenge. X-rays were to be taken later to see how serious the injury is.
