By Sunday morning, Assani Lukimya had sorted out his thoughts and answered the media's critical questions. "I would be lying if I said that this kind of match doesn't leave any mark on me. I really dealt with it last night and it's still eating at me. But the fight for spots will start back up tomorrow," said Lukimya about his mistakes that led to both goals in Werder's 2-0 loss against Schalke.
The defender cannot just hide away after his two big blunders in the match against Schalke 04. He accepted the team's support after the final whistle but he must fight his way back on his own too. "Of course I haven't experienced such a critical situation before. But you don't have to worry at all about me," said Lukimya. "Mistakes happen in the Champions League too. I want to stop making them, and I will. Now I can't just hide away. In football, you can get out of this kind of situation if you play two good matches in a row. That has to be the next step. But of course I was happy that the teammates showed that things are good in the team."
But Lukimya didn't just get support from the team. "I got a lot of backing from my family. I also had a chance there to come down. Saturday night I had a visit from of all places Düsseldorf and we joked around a lot," said Lukimya, who hopes to be back in the line-up this coming Saturday against his former team. And that's another reason for him to keep his spirit up. "The coach makes the decisions. But I don't think it can be ruled out that I will be back in there. It's all about the performance in training. I will try my best," said the defender.
Manager Thomas Eichin believes Lukimya enriches the team despite his last two matches. "I really feel sorry for him because he is someone who always plays with heart and soul. We can use those kinds of guys," said Eichin.
