Despite the lousy weather and lactate test, Assani Lukimya could not stop smiling on Thursday as the 25-year-old showed up at the start of Werder training as a new father. His girlfriend Assma El Aissati had given birth to their daughter Leyla Sofia on 30 December 2012.
"It is an unbelievable feeling," said the Congolese. "She waited one week longer than expected but the moment in which she was born was indescribably beautiful," said ‘Luki', who was on hand for the birth. "Initially the plan was different but I am very happy I decided this way. You cannot describe that, you have to experience it."
‘Luki' had the support from the team well before the birth. "Everyone who has kids themselves helped me. But I especially got tips from Elli and Marko, who also just recently had a baby and from Raphael Wolf, who has a bit more experience," said Lukimya.
Despite a lack of sleep, ‘Luki' takes a lot of new energy from the birth of his child. "The little one gives me so much strength - at home, at work and in life in general. I may not sleep as much at night but I saw with Elli and Marko that the two are fitter than ever before. I recharged my battery during my holiday and now I want to go all-out in the preparations," said Lukimya.
Still, the centre back wouldn't mind skipping the trip to the training camp. "It will be really tough for me to leave my daughter on Saturday. She only got home yesterday and everything is still so new. But my girlfriend has a lot of support and will do a great job. I am really looking forward to coming back," added Lukimya.
