Uncompromising at the back, successful up front - a good and fair description of Assani Lukimya's performance in the DFB-Cup. For the Werder defender, who scored the intermittent 2-1 against FV Illertissen, it was a personal start as he would have hoped for. Now ‘Luki' is looking to repeat that performance against Hertha BSC.
The fact that Assani Lukimya got his name on the score-sheet in the cup was no happy accident! During the pre-season preparations, and at times throughout the previous campaign, the defender proved he has an eye for goal. At the back, the Congolese defender also has specific intentions. Aside from normal training, Lukimya has also been putting in some extra shifts with a personal fitness coach: "Together with my coach, I do some exercises that are not normal in football but that bring me along personally - particularly in relation to mobility, dynamic and reaction speed. The difference may be minimal, but the little things can be decisive in football," explained Werder's number 5.
And those little things could also prove decisive during the league opener in Berlin: „It will be a difficult game for us, but I think we are well armed for it," insisted ‚Luki‘, for whom the opening game is something rather special: „I had some got times in Berlin. I began my professional career there and I am very thankful to the club. I am really looking forward to going back and my whole family will be in the stadium."
But it's not only his family that the defender can look forward to on Saturday. Some 8,000 Werder fans are expected to make the trip to the ‘Olympiastadium'. „That's stunning. The support from the Werder fans at away games is extremely motivating. It's not just a normal thing that so many fans travel," noted ‘Luki', who hopes to impress the Green-White fateful with another strong display.
