The worst case scenario has come true as Melvyn Lorenzen suffered a torn right knee ligament during Werder's morning training. That was the result of the examination by Werder team doctor Philip Heitmann. The striker will soon travel to Augsburg to undergo an operation by knee specialist Ulrich Boenisch.
"This is very bitter for Melvyn. He just came back at the end of last year from a long injury break and he was in a good form. The operation will determine just how long we will have to do without him. We will support him as best we can," said head coach Viktor Skripnik, who will be without the 20-year-old for at least two months.
Lorenzen celebrated his comeback on the 15th match day of the season. After missing months due to injury, he started in the home match against Hannover 96 and scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 3-3 draw.
