Two days afterwards and Melvyn Lorenzen is still beaming - certainly Monday afternoon when he discovered that the fans had elected him as Volkswagen Man of the Match. The highlights for the striking talent just keep coming. And he admitted: "I really haven't been able to deal with all of this."
"It was a very special moment," the youngster described his solo run and goal to give Werder the 2-1 lead against Hannover 96 last Saturday. It was a goal which he "kept watching again and again". But the match, which was the London native's starting debut, was almost over at halftime for him. Werder coach Viktor Skripnik said Lorenzen, who came to Kiel with his mother when he was 5 years old, had a "really strong week of training" with the professionals and had ran out of gas shortly after the halftime.
But Lorenzen used his final power to reward himself for the hard work during the rehab. "It was the last opportunity to do something, at least to attempt a shot on goal," recalled Lorenzen about the moment when Fin Bartels sent a through ball to him. Once the ball had hit the back of the net, the speedy striker couldn't restrain his celebrations. While celebrating, he remembered his family who supported him during the difficult times. "This goal showed me that I can do anything, regardless of how impossible it appears."
About Lorenzen, head coach Viktor Skripnik said: "He is adult enough. He knows that he hasn't reached the stars yet and that he needs to continue to work hard." Because Lorenzen of course wants to play in the remaining two matches before the winter break. "I am in a major competition and know that I need to continue to give my all. First of all, I have only been in training for three weeks, you also have to consider that. Still, I think I have pretty good chances," said Lorenzen. At least the chances didn't diminish with his nice goal on Saturday.
