When Melvyn Lorenzen speaks, he's very quiet. The 20-year-old chooses his words wisely. "I have gotten quiet during the long injury break and also maybe a little more mature," said the London native in the lobby of Werder's team hotel Regnum Carya. Shortly before Christmas, Lorenzen went through a turbulent return to the Bundesliga, now he is with the team in the training camp in Belek.

WERDER.DE: Shortly before the end of the year, things got quite turbulent for you. All of a sudden you were in the starting line-up and directly scored your first Bundesliga goal. Have you found the time to look back on all that?
Lorenzen: "Back then I didn't have any time to think about what just happened. During the winter break, I took time to review it. I had just been with the U23s for three weeks in training and then I was allowed to train with the professionals. It was a huge thing for me that I would get the chance and the trust from the coaches so quickly. It was a positive shock to play against Hannover from the start."

WERDER.DE: There has been a lot of reporting about your goal against Hannover and your celebration after it. Do you remember what you were thinking at that time?
Lorenzen: "I can only remember the ball going into the netting and then I looked around. There were 40,000 fans celebrating, going crazy with you - it's indescribable. I remembered the words of a friend of mine, and I absolutely wanted to do the goal celebration that we talked about, but the rest was completely uncontrolled and emotional. That was definitely a very intensive moment."

Trust and maturity

WERDER.DE: You mentioned it ... you had to sit out a year with knee cartilage damage. How relieved were you at that moment?
Lorenzen: "It was a huge relief and also a surprise. I never would have thought it could have gone that quickly after returning to team training just three weeks earlier. More or less, I didn't play any football for a whole year. Of course I am not yet at 100 percent, but this one moment was very important for me."

WERDER.DE: How were you able to keep your head up during all the injury breaks?
Lorenzen: "I had to go through quite a few setbacks where I thought, when will it finally stop? In the summer, I was nearly back with the team but had to re-start from scratch. Honestly though, I never doubted myself and always had my sights set on my goals and kept telling myself, as simple as it sounds, that if I want it I will do it - sooner or later."

WERDER.DE: The mood in the team is good, but everybody knows what's at stake in the second half. It's all about collecting points in the relegation fight. What do you think about the situation?
Lorenzen: "The coach knows exactly what still needs to be done. In the last few weeks we have been able to collect a pretty decent amount of points. If we keep working in a concentrated manner, then we will get out of there."

WERDER.DE: Where do you get your calm?
Lorenzen: "In my long injury break, I learned to be more patient and take the time. Looking back, I take from my injury break a trust and maturity to better deal with problems - just staying calm altogether is important. I used to worry about everything for a week - now I only think about it for a day (laughs)."
