Werder's players walked off the pitch disappointed after Bayer 04 Leverkusen showed them a lesson in efficient counter attack football with a 4-1 victory. Head coach Thomas Schaaf defended his team in the changing room.

"We have a young team which also has the right to play bad once in a while. Besides the match against Augsburg, we haven't experienced that yet this season. Today was one of those days. We just weren't in the game. We just made too many mistakes as a team and made things too easy for our opponents," said Schaaf. "Everything we had shown until now, especially in the home matches, was missing today. The confidence, the challenges and the pressure of bringing the opponent in danger. That went for the whole team. Everyone had instances where things didn't work - here a cross, there a pass, or one foul too many. We could never build up the necessary pressure."

The players offered a detailed analysis of the match afterwards in the mixed zone and WERDER.DE put together the most important statements about the contest:

Sebastian Prödl:
"We did not play our best match today and were punished for it. We knew that Leverkusen were ice-cold. That was an example for absolute efficiency. And exactly during the time when we were applying pressure is when they score the decisive goal. We are not rewarding ourselves often enough for our effort and punished ice-cold for small mistakes. Of course I take some responsibility for the goals. The communication between the back line and the midfield did not work well."

Aaron Hunt:
"We never found our way into the match and in the first half got caught up in the atmosphere in the first 12 minutes and were brutally punished. Altogether we did a little better in the second half but kept getting beat on counter attacks."

Clemens Fritz:
"We struggled to get into the match today. I had the feeling that we didn't believe in our game and we were lacking confidence. We weren't consequent enough in the challenges and Leverkusen won a lot of second balls and were an example in efficiency. The defeat showed once again that we have to hard work in every match for every point and every victory. We have to go to our limits at all times."
