To top it all off, something "forbidden": The Werder players used their last day of the China Tour to visit Beijing. The highlight of the tour through the Chinese capital was a visit to the Forbidden City, the imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty. The Green-Whites braved the scorching temperatures to tour through the heart of the metropolis, which is a UNESCO World Culture Heritage site.

"We were very happy that the German embassy made it possible to get a few further impressions of the country and the people before we leave. The Forbidden City is really worth seeing, especially the buildings fascinated me," said Werder's sports manager Thomas Eichin. The Green-Whites left the port city Tianjin in the morning and it took about three-quarters of an hour with the train to reach Beijing.

The players sweated through 32 degrees on the last stage of their trip like they had the day before on the training grounds. The number one trend was pulling up your T-shirt and going around with your stomach showing. From Theodor Gebre Selassie to Clemens Fritz, nearly all of the Bremen players went around like that but at the same time were thrilled with the sites. "This is an entirely different culture. It was a very interesting part of the trip, seeing this history, even though it was a little exhausting with the hot weather after the tough week," said defensive boss Sebastian Prödl.

Meal at former teammate Shao

Afterwards, coach Robin Dutt and his team continued on to the Worker's Stadium. With 64,000 seats, the home grounds of Beijing Guoan is one of the most modern and largest arenas in the country. It was renovated as part of the 2008 Olympic Games and also includes the restaurant Puerta 20, the destination of the Werder delegation. This was the site of the team's final meal on Chinese soil. The owner of the restaurant is former Bundesliga player Jiayi Shao, who played with Nils Petersen at Energie Cottbus.

At about 9 p.m., it was time to leave. After one week, two successful test matches, three different cities and a number of new impressions, the Werder group was making their way to the airport. The airplane back to Germany was leaving at about midnight. But the next flight is already awaiting the Green-Whites as the team will play Pogon Stettin Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
