While their teammates are either playing at the Euro 2012 or laying on the beach on holidays, two Werder players are busy working on their game at Weser Stadium. Mehmet Ekici and Felix Kroos have been training almost unnoticed for three weeks on their comebacks.

The start for the midfielder duo came in mid-May as most of their teammates began the training-free time. First there was the initial stage with physiotherapist Florian Lauerer in the catacombs of Weser Stadium with weightlifting, stabilisation and conditioning. "It is certainly not an easy time. But on the other hand, the quiet around Weser Stadium offers optimal conditions. And there is still the fun with the teammates who are still active. I have to slowly work on getting used to the burden," said Kroos, who underwent a spleen operation in late April in Bremen and is currently working with physiotherapist Sven Plagge. The 21-year-old Kroos will not have holidays this summer. "Physically I would like to catch up as much as possible to get back to the needed level," added Kroos.

His teammate Ekici is a good step further along after missing the last weeks of the Bundesliga with groin surgery. "I feel very good and healthy and hope that this stretch of injuries is finally over with. I am very motivated and I will have a better foundation for the beginning of the season through these training sessions," said the 22-year-old. But the Turkish international is more worried at the moment with the current training. "The goal is to complete a test on Thursday. If that goes well, maybe I could get a couple days of holidays. That would be important for the head," said Ekici

In addition to Ekici and Kroos, Özkan Yildirim and Levent Aycicek are spending their summer break at Weser Stadium working on returning to the professional squad after knee injuries.
